James Norwood can overtake Sergio Aguero as England’s top marksman should he find the net for Tranmere Rovers in today’s League Two final against Newport – and he is prepared to go bald to do so.
The Manchester City striker is joint top scorer in all competitions with 32 goals to his credit – just one ahead of Arsenal’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who will have Aguero in his sights in the Europa League final against Chelsea.
But first, at Wembley, 32-goal Norwood will get the chance to knock the Argentinian off his perch. And Norwood is considering having his hair shaved off to overtake Aguero in the goalscoring stakes and secure Tranmere to back-to-back promotions.
‘I might even get a skinhead’
“To find myself even mentioned in the same breath as Aguero is a major compliment – he’s one of the best strikers in the world,” Norwood said. “Of course, being level on goals with him is really special, but let’s be clear here – what he’s doing is at the very elite level.
“There’s lots to admire about him – finishing prowess, positioning – but one thing I won’t do is copy his silver fox look – I don’t think my thinning barnet could take it.
“But it’s funny because it seems as though the more hair I lose the more goals I score, so I might even ask for a skinhead next time I go to the barber’s.”
Norwood will be hoping it is business as usual on Saturday – he has netted 92 times in 188 games for the Merseyside club.
