The Champions League final took its first dramatic twist after just 22 seconds on Saturday night when Liverpool were awarded a controversial penalty after a Moussa Sissoko handball.
Sadio Mane attacked down the left of the Tottenham penalty box, cut back inside and then fired a cross towards the back post. Having barely left the Liverpool forward’s foot, the ball cannoned into Sissoko and referee Damir Skomina pointed to the spot without hesitation.
The Spurs players protested, but replays showed the ball hitting Sissoko’s chest and then outstretched arm as he tried to cajole teammates into position. Skomina checked with his video assistant referee (VAR) who opted not to overrule.

“His arm’s out,” noted Steve McManaman on BT Sport commentary. “It’s off his chest and then his arm. His arm is out in an unnatural position. He shouldn’t have his hand up there.”
Jermaine Jenas added: “I think the initial contact hits his chest but when he kind of swings his arm down there is contact with his arm onto the ball.”
