Liverpool player ratings for Champions League final as Tottenham

The final did not quite scale the dramatic heights of the semi-finals, but Liverpool will be delighted with the lack of excitement near their goal.

Stellar performances from the Reds defenders delivered a 2-0 clean sheet Champions League win in Madrid over Tottenham, in a somewhat deflating final for the neutral.

Liverpool’s goal came from the harshest of errors, although there can be little complaint about the legalities. Sissoko’s extended arm was struck by Sadio Mane’s chipped cross, leading to a penalty for handball. Salah converted effectively.

80 minutes of stuttering football followed, as Liverpool’s defence parried Tottenham capably and counterattacks fizzled into nothing. The result was sealed by Divock Origi, popping up with yet another big goal from the bench. The Belgian found the very bottom corner with a well-placed strike off his left, after Joel Matip gifted him a simple lay-off into simply too much space.

Liverpool left Madrid winners, with their sixth Champions League title, and they will not care about the lack of drama one little bit.

Here is how Liverpool rated on the night:

Player ratings

Alisson 9/10

Largely untested, but he passed well. His double save in the second half off Son and Moura was very composed. Read Eriksen’s free-kick well and parried it.

Trent Alexander-Arnold 8/10

Defended capably and pushed forward with malice. His set-piece delivery was a little slapdash at times, but his shot from audacious range was surprisingly close.

Virgil Van Dijk 10/10

Imposing and composed as ever, his constant communication is a huge part of the solid defence. Did hugely well to prevent Son’s driving run in the second half.

Joel Matip 9/10

Aggressive with attackers and always had an eye for an interception. Kane drifted to him all night for no joy. His simple touch to assist Origi was deft.

Andrew Robertson 9/10

Very good crossing into dangerous areas, showing great attacking intent to complement his movement. Let off a rifling shot which was parried well.

Fabinho 7/10

A few badly placed balls, but he tackled firmly and broke up play to quickly instigate counters.

Jordan Henderson (c) 7/10

Enormous work rate around the pitch. Marshalled the midfield and pressed effectively.

Georginio Wijnaldum 6/10

Swept up the loose ends well and passed simply and effectively. Was taken off for Milner, which was probably valid as he was bringing the least at the time.

Mohamed Salah 7/10

Took his penalty with conviction. A little quiet at times, but he created space for others with his movement, a little hesitant when he got space.

Roberto Firmino 5/10

He was a little easily suppressed tonight, and despite some neat moments his lukewarm display was cut short when he was substituted early in the second half for Origi.

Sadio Mane 8/10

A simmering influence from the left side who marauded about the pitch causing problems with his footwork, agility and intelligence. Bought the penalty off Sissoko.

Divock Origi 8/10

Took his goal exceptionally. Could not have been more in the corner. All the impact you need.

James Milner 6/10

Did not mould the game in any major way, but he was assured enough in the midfield.

Joe Gomez 6/10

Played for two minutes to close out the match.
