Sebastien Haller scored for just the second time since New Year’s Day to lift some of the gloom around West Ham United and set up a Carabao Cup third round tie against Leeds or Hull.
The Frenchman found the net twice in the first half as David Moyes’ side beat Charlton 3-0 at the London Stadium on Tuesday night with a late third coming from Felipe Anderson.
Victory followed a poor start to the new season, last Saturday’s defeat to Newcastle following a lack of investment this summer, including the controversial sale of Grady Diangana to West Bromwich Albion.
Late goals from Jack Grealish and Keinan Davis earned last season’s finalists, Aston Villa, a 3-1 win at Burton – who made the last four in 2019. Colin Daniel put the Brewers ahead in the second minute before Ollie Watkins levelled at the Pirelli Stadium.

Luton Town’s 1-0 victory at Reading, courtesy of Jordan Clark’s header, earned the Hatters a home tie with Manchester United next week, while Lincoln will welcome Premier League champions Liverpool to Sincil Bank after romping to a 5-0 win at Bradford.
Patrick Schmidt and Ben Williams put Barnsley into the third round for just the second time in a decade as they won 2-0 at Middlesbrough. The Tykes visit Chelsea in the last 32.
Leyton Orient will welcome Tottenham Hotspur next week after coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Plymouth Argyle at Brisbane Road. Harry Kane, the Spurs and England captain who had a spell on loan at Orient, is sponsoring the east London sides’ shirts for this campaign.
Preston came from behind to win 2-1 at 10-man Derby, while Millwall breezed past Cheltenham 3-1. Jordan Graham’s penalty earned Gillingham a 1-1 draw with Coventry, the Gills progressing 5-4 in the shoot-out. Scott Twince earned Newport a 1-0 win over Cambridge, the Welsh side facing Watford next after the relegated side beat Oxford 3-0 in a shoot-out after Ken Sema hit a late leveller.
