Eric Dier handball: Even Steve Bruce doesn’t think Newcastle deserved ‘nonsense’ penalty against Tottenham

TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR STADIUM — Steve Bruce has called for Premier League managers to unite and demand that the new implementation of the handball rule is stopped despite his side benefiting from the rule change on Sunday.

Eric Dier was punished by the Video Assistant Referee and Callum Wilson scored a stoppage-time penalty to steal a point with their only shot on target against Tottenham.

Spurs manager Jose Mourinho did not hide his anger by storming down the tunnel after the penalty was awarded but repeatedly refused to comment on the matter afterwards, saying he would only incur a fine from the Football Association if he did so and that he would rather give the money to charity.

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson led the calls over the weekend in reaction to the new handball decisions, on Saturday complaining that the “nonsense” rule is ruining the game after a dubious incident in their defeat to Everton.

“I can understand why Spurs will go berserk and Roy Hodgson reacted like he did,” Bruce said. “It is a total nonsense, we should be jumping through hoops but I would be devastated if that was us. Maybe Roy is right, maybe we all need to get together. The decisions are ruining the spectacle. We have to get together as managers and say this must stop.

“We should all query these new rules and who makes them and also the way we’re implementing them. I thought VAR was going to come in for clear and obvious errors. Now it’s ludicrous and it ruins the spectacle of the Premier League. If we’re not careful all we’re going to be talking about is VAR decisions.

“The handball rule has been in place for over 100 years. Dier wasn’t even looking at the ball when he jumped for it. I know it will bite me eventually and that’s wrong. All we’re doing is not talking about the game but about VAR incidents.”

On Saturday Hodgson said: ”It’s completely unacceptable. It’s destroying my enjoyment of the game of football. I can’t understand how everyone in the game – the Premier League, referees, managers and coaches – have allowed this rule to come into operation. I don’t want to profit from it or lose from it.”

Twenty four hours later, Tottenham completely outplayed Newcastle for 90 minutes, with 23 shots on Newcastle’s goal, 12 on target, enjoying 66 per cent possession. Newcastle goalkeeper Karl Darlow made multiple stunning saves from Harry Kane, Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela. Son Heung-min struck the woodwork twice in the first half before being substituted with a hamstring injury.

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper coach Nuno Santos was sent off after the final whistle for protesting about the penalty decision. Mourinho intimated that the same fate might have befallen him if he had not left the touchline and headed straight to the changing room.

“The only thing I know is I’m more experienced than him (Nuno Santos) and I left the tunnel when the referee blew the whistle for the last time,” Mourinho said. “I know for some matches for some clubs even after the whistle something important can happened after the whistle. So I left for the dressing room and he is a little bit more naive than me to stay there.”
