Of the three chips in Fantasy Premier League excluding the two wildcards, Triple Captain is arguably the most powerful.
While Bench Boost and Free Hit can both come in handy during a season, Triple Captain has the potential to massively transform your season… for better or for worse.
Selecting a Triple Captain who goes on to score a hat-trick or more in that gameweek is as good as it gets for FPL managers.
Over two hundred thousand managers stuck the armband on Mohamed Salah for Liverpool’s first game of the season against Leeds United and were rewarded with 60 points from the Egyptian alone.
Conversely, there is nothing more crushing than seeing your Triple Captain fail to deliver as happened to those who picked Sadio Mane in a double gameweek in 2019-20 only for him to get injured half an hour into the opening game.
As is the case with all of the FPL chips, choosing the correct time to play them is a lottery, although there are some important factors to consider before making that decision.
What is a Triple Captain?
In FPL, the Triple Captain is a boost chip that means your team’s captain will score three times the amount of points, instead of the usual two for players designated as a captain.
The catch is that it’s a one-time thing, and once it’s gone it’s gone, so choose wisely…
When to use it?
Holding your Triple Captain chip for a double gameweek is a popular strategy as it offers your captain twice as many matches to deliver points, assuming they are involved in both games.
It also means that if your player blanks in one game they can make up it for in the next. Salah was a popular Triple Captain pick when Liverpool faced Wolves and West Ham in a double gameweek last season and after misfiring in the first match, he delivered a goal and assist in the second.
Those who entrusted Mane with the armband that week were not necessarily wrong to do, even if it failed to pay off. FPL is a game of chance, after all.
It is unclear when there will be a double gameweek this season, but Aston Villa, Burnley, Manchester City and Manchester United are all set to have one at some point after missing the first game of the season. Triple captaining Kevin De Bruyne or Bruno Fernandes later on in the campaign could pay off handsomely.
That’s a good rule of thumb, but there are a couple of instances outside of double gameweeks when it may be beneficial to use your Triple Captain chip.
Perhaps the fixtures for your team’s players in a single gameweek may be so good you decide to use it then. Choosing a Manchester City asset against either West Brom or Fulham seems a viable strategy given the strength of their attack and the early season struggles of the newly-promoted sides.
And with most managers making use of their chips during a double gameweek, it could be worth taking the risk and using yours at a different time, especially if you’re trailing in your league.
