There is no greater tragedy in Fantasy Premier League than a player -or in some cases, players – being left on the bench only to rack up double-digit hauls that you cannot benefit from.
There was a prime example of that in Gameweek 2 when someone managed to leave 52 points on their bench, with Alisson, Timothy Castagne, James Rodriguez and Dominic Calvert-Lewin all left out of a starting line-up.
Quite why that particular manager decided to leave over £30m worth of talent on their bench is another matter, especially considering Everton duo Rodriguez and Calvert-Lewin were at home to West Brom…
You can stop this nightmare from becoming a reality by implementing the ‘Bench Boost’ function.
What is a Bench Boost?
When the Bench Boost function is implemented the points scored by your bench players in the next Gameweek are included in your total – as opposed to just the players in your first-choice XI.
So instead of being restricted to just your starting XI of players, all 15 members of your squad will accrue points.
How do I use it?
Simply go to the My Team tab and select the Play Bench Boost button.
In the app mode, this is found above your team selection, while on browser it’s found below.
When can I use it?
Whenever you like, but it is a once in a season option.
If you squander your Bench Boost that’s just tough luck.
When should I use it?
To have a chance of maximising its benefits, a Bench Boost can be activated during a “Double Gameweek” when some teams have more than one fixture.
Applied in a regular Gameweek the Bench Boost will score you an extra four players’ worth of points. If, however, the Bench Boost is used in a Double Gameweek, FPL managers could potentially enjoy the benefit of an extra eight players’ worth of points.
While it is unclear at this early stage in the campaign when the first Double Gameweek will be, we already know that Aston Villa, Burnley, Manchester City and Manchester United will be involved in one at some stage, after missing the first gameweek of the season.
However, FPL managers can enjoy just as much as success by using Bench Boost in a regular gameweek too. If you believe your entire squad will play and the majority have good fixtures, then by all means activate the chip.
As with the other chips, there is no definitive right or wrong time to play them.
Can I cancel it?
Yes, they can be cancelled anytime before the Gameweek deadline.
Remember this season, the deadline closes 90 minutes rather than an hour before the first match, so don’t get caught out!
