Jose Mourinho has pleaded with the Premier League not to “punish” Tottenham with an unmanageable fixture list following the postponement of last Wednesday’s match against Fulham.
Spurs are still in the dark over when the game will take place after it was called off at just three hours’ notice following a coronavirus outbreak in Fulham’s squad.
“I would like to know when I’m going to play against Fulham,” Mourinho said, “refusing totally to be punished by a congestion of crazy fixtures like we were in the start of the season.”
In September, Tottenham were forced to play six games in 16 days due to their participation in the early rounds of the Europa League. The Premier League were unable to alter the calendar because the north Londoners’ participation in the European qualifiers was only confirmed in August when Arsenal – who finished outside the top six – won the FA Cup.
Mourinho called for the governing body to provide more clarity on fixture changes after watching his side’s 3-0 victory over Leeds on Saturday.
Manchester United and Manchester City have now received confirmation that their postponed games from September, against Burnley and Aston Villa respectively, will take place in January. They were granted a later start to the campaign having progressed to the later stages of last season’s Europa League and Champions League.
One of the two Manchester clubs will play either Tottenham or Brentford in the League Cup final, but Mourinho wants better communication on when league commitments will be fulfilled.
“[United and City] didn’t start the season at the same time, they deserved that extra week,” he said. “What I don’t understand is how you can start the season without knowing [when] that match is going to be played. And we only know that because there were two matches to be postponed.”
Spurs have the chance to reach their first domestic cup final in six years if they can overcome Brentford. The tie has added significance with the north Londoners now entering their 13th year without a trophy.
“It doesn’t matter the club, where you are, every competition is important,” Mourinho said. “Especially in the club without silverware for more than one decade.”
The Tottenham manager also hinted the club will take action against Sergio Reguilon, Giovani Lo Celso and Erik Lamela after the trio were pictured breaking social distancing rules at a gathering on New Year’s Eve.
“Of course we feel disappointed because we give the players all the education, we give the players all the conditions and of course we are not happy.
“We don’t need to open the door to you and let you know what is going on internally, what are going to be the consequences, how we approached that negative surprise. I feel disappointed.”
