Finland’s players warmed up for their second match of Euro 2020 against Russia in “Get Well Christian” t-shirts after Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest in a match against them on Saturday.
Eriksen collapsed to the floor in the 42nd minute of the game and had to be resuscitated by medics on the pitch before being taken to Copenhagen’s Rigshospitalet for further tests.
The Inter Milan playmaker issued a positive update from his hospital bed on Tuesday, reassuring fans that he is “fine – under the circumstances”.
Players from both sides were understandably affected by the incident which cast a shadow over Finland’s historic 1-0 win.
“Playing on was really tough, really difficult for both sets of teams,” Finland captain Tim Sparv told the Guardian the following day. “You do what you can, you try to get back to that kind of mental state when it is about football but it is always in your head.
“You start thinking about your family, for me it’s my girlfriend and five-month-old daughter. I contacted them immediately after what happened to Eriksen and told them how we were feeling.
“I hope anyone who needs it will get the help to deal with this, as it can be a very traumatic experience.”
Uefa have since received criticism for rescheduling the game just a couple of hours after the incident occurred, including from Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand who claimed his players were pressured into playing by the governing body.
