German national anthem: FA urges England fans to respect opponents after ’10 German bombers’ video emerges

The Football Association has implored England’s supporters not to disrespect Germany during the Euro 2020 last-16 match at Wembley on Tuesday evening.

With the capacity increased to 40,000 at the national stadium, it is feared that the behaviour of England fans will overshadow the crunch knockout game.

A video has circulated on Twitter via an unofficial England Football Fans group, with almost 28,000 followers, of the Three Lions’ travelling supporters singing their controversial “Ten German Bombers” chant in Dortmund back in 2017.

The post says it is “to get you in the mood” for the game. It has been liked and shared almost 5,000 times. There are also concerns that England supporters will boo Germany’s Deutschlandlied national anthem.

The FA has emailed its 21,000 England Supporters Travel Club members urging them to remain respectful of the Germany team. The governing body has reiterated the message via private and public social media channels.

“Whether you are at Wembley Stadium, or watching from somewhere else, please support England in the right way, before, during and after the match,” the email reads. “This includes respecting each national anthem and the players’ choice to take the knee before kick-off.

“We want you to be able to watch the match in a safe and enjoyable environment that’s free from any discriminatory or disrespectful behaviour.”

i revealed ahead of England vs Scotland in the group stage that the FA was encouraging supporters to report any racism or discrimination they witnessed in the Wembley stands, after a loud minority of fans continued to boo players taking a knee, in a gesture against racism and inequality, before matches.
