Harry Maguire is set to start against Germany in England’s last 16 game at Euro 2020.
The defender has made a swift recovery from an ankle injury sustained six weeks ago, which he puts down to using an innovative battery-powered ankle strap.
Maguire was a doubt to play any part in the tournament, but England manager Gareth Southgate has been surprised by the player’s recovery speed and was able to start the centre-back and play him for the full game against the Czech Republic.
Maguire trained separately from the rest of the squad on Thursday, but has been able to re-join the group and is expected to start in England’s crunch game at Wembley.
Maguire, 28, has been using a ProMOTION EV1 strap – developed with the help of former England and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney – that provides cooling, heating and compression without requiring ice or gel packs. The device can monitor skin temperatures within 1C and feeds data to a smartphone app.
“ProMOTION EV1 improved the timescale of my recovery from injury,” Maguire, who is an investor in the company behind the strap, said. “I’ve constantly used the technology on my ankle over the last month.
“I have the England and Manchester United medics who are the best about and have obviously been integral to my recovery – but they can’t be with me 24/7. The device is really compact… You can take it wherever you want, it’s easy to carry and has been a game changer in getting me fit for the Euros.”
