Before Euro 2020 kicked off, it was the usual suspects being tipped for the Golden Boot – and that much has not changed.
Harry Kane began the tournament as the favourite, the Tottenham Hotspur striker coming off the back of a third such award in the Premier League.
The England skipper has quickly been usurped in the odds, however, with Romelu Lukaku now leading the way following his brace in Belgium’s opening game against Russia. While the Inter Milan forward wasn’t on the scoresheet against Denmark, he still edges Cristiano Ronaldo, scorer of a brace in Portugal’s 3-0 win over Hungary.
Ronaldo, of course, has an added incentive to increase his tally as he hunts down Ali Daei’s all-time international goal record of 109. The Portuguese needs another three goals if he is to equal Daei this summer.
Euro 2020 Golden Boot standings
3 goals: Schick (Czech Rep)
2 goals: Yaremchuk (Ukraine), Yarmolenko (Ukraine), Immobile (Italy), Lukaku (Belgium), Dumfries (Netherlands)
Correct as of 18 June
One man who has burst onto the scene is Patrik Schick, the Czech Republic star who scored a brilliant double – a header and a 50-yard screamer – against Scotland and followed that up with a penalty against Croatia.
Schick was not exactly a household name before the Euros, but he is now being talked about as a genuine contender for one of the highest individual accolades on offer.
Romelu Lukaku 3-1
It was a poignant moment when Lukaku bagged his first against Russia, a goal he dedicated to Inter teammate Christian Eriksen on the day of his collapse against Finland.
Cristiano Ronaldo 4-1
Ronaldo has never won the Golden Boot at a European Championship, but he is now the competition’s all-time leading goalscorer.
Ciro Immobile 7-1
Italy became the first team to qualify for the knockout stages and while Manuel Locatelli has been receiving the bulk of the attention, Immobile has kept himself in the running with a goal against Turkey and another against Switzerland.
Patrik Schick 7-1
Schick’s prospects could depend on exactly how far the Czech Republic can go, though they’ll fancy their chances as one of the dark horses after a decent start to the group stages.
Harry Kane 10-1
Kane has received some criticism for his performance in England’s 1-0 win over Croatia, but he’ll be used to that. Having already won a Golden Boot at the 2018 World Cup, the Three Lions skipper knows exactly what it takes – and a few penalties along the way wouldn’t hurt either.
Kylian Mbappe 11-1
Mbappe didn’t get off to the ideal start when his goal against Germany was disallowed, but he was effervescent enough to suggest he’ll make a big impact following a season in which he scored 27 league goals for PSG this season.
