Trent Alexander-Arnold injury: Liverpool star a doubt for Euro 2020 after hurting thigh in Austria win

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s participation at Euro 2020 could be in doubt after he limped off with a thigh injury in the closing stages of England’s 1-0 victory over Austria at the Riverside.

The 22-year-old was one of four right backs selected in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad for the tournament and started the game in his natural position with Kieran Trippier deployed on the opposite flank.

It was a relatively comfortable evening for the Liverpool defender but it ended in disastrous fashion as he had to be helped around the perimeter of the pitch by an England physio after suffering the injury while clearing the ball upfield.

“It’s obviously not good to see him come off in the way that he did,” Gareth Southgate said afterwards. “We will have to assess him over the next 24 hours. So we’ll just have to wait and see.”

When asked by ITV Sport whether it was a hamstring problem, Southgate responded: “No, I think thigh, but the medical team are assessing it.”

Southgate refused to be drawn on whether he would have to call up a replacement for Alexander-Arnold, saying: “Let’s just see how Trent is and we will go from there.”

Alexander-Arnold looked despondent as he made his gingerly around the pitch and struggled to put pressure on his left leg with a member of England’s backroom staff helping to keep the pressure off it.

Southgate cut seven players from his provisional 33-man squad including James Ward-Prowse, Jesse Lingard, Ollie Watkins and Ben White, who enjoyed an impressive late cameo against Austria.

Although there is no specialist right back in England’s reserve list, Southgate has plenty of options in that position with Trippier, Kyle Walker and Reece James all selected in the final 26.
