Romelu Lukaku and Kylian Mbappe are the other two obvious candidates for the individual prize at the Euros, not least because Belgium and France are among the favourites to lift the trophy. In another triumph of hope over experience, England are right up there too.

Bookmakers inevitably lean towards the goalscorers of nations who are likely to go all the way, or at the very least reach the semi-finals. That means Poland’s Robert Lewandowski is considered an outsider despite a record-breaking season in the Bundesliga, scoring 41 goals and registering seven assists.

An even bigger indicator that the top nations’ strikers are favoured is that Timo Werner’s odds are shorter, with the Germany frontman priced at 20-1. Chelsea fans need not be too perplexed, however, as he has looked more comfortable for his national team since his move to Stamford Bridge, scoring once in the Confederations Cup and four times in the Uefa Nations League.
