A difficult night for Atletico Madrid at Anfield was made even worse with Felipe’s sending off with the Rojiblancos trailing Liverpool 2-0.
Two visionary assists from Trent Alexander-Arnold had set up Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane for the Reds’ opening goals.
Atletico’s task was made even harder when referee Danny Makkelie dismissed Felipe following the centre-back’s foul from behind on Mane.
It was initially suggested that, with some feeling the challenge only dubiously warranted a red card, the 32-year-old had been punished partly for the foul, and partly for dissent. He appeared to ignore the whistle several times before gesturing towards Makkelie and shouting.
However, Uefa confirmed to BT Sport that Felipe had been given his marching orders for the foul alone.
After watching the replays, former Premier League referee Peter Walton said on BT Sport: “You notice the ball is not within playing distance, he’s just kicked him… you could argue that is violent conduct.
“When I see it in slow motion I have to say it’s the right decision.”
Jota subsequently had a third Liverpool goal ruled out for offside and Luis Suarez – himself booked amidst the fallout of Felipe’s red, much to the amusement of the Anfield crowd – also saw his strike chalked off, moments before he was substituted.
