Premier League results: Newcastle hold much-improved Leeds before Man Utd, Spurs and Chelsea in action

Sam Allardyce’s first home game in charge of Leeds ended in an enthralling draw with Newcastle, as Callum Wilson’s brace cancelled out finishes from Luke Ayling and Rasmus Kristensen.

Ayling had opened the scoring after just seven minutes, but a reckless challenge by Maximilian Wober on Alexander Isak allowed Wilson to score the first of his two penalties after half-an-hour.

His second came 20 minutes from time, as Junior Firpo cheaply handballed Joe Willock’s cross, and Wilson hammered the spot-kick into the roof of the net.

Kristensen’s deflected strike off Kieran Trippier gave the home fans hope of a much-needed win, but the clumsy Firpo’s second yellow put pay to hopes of more than a point.

Leeds remain in the relegation zone by a point, while Newcastle strengthened their ambitions at a Champions League place.

In the pick of the 3pm kick-offs, sixth-placed Spurs visit eighth-ranked Aston Villa. Ryan Mason’s side will know a win would almost guarantee European football at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season, even if it is in the Europa Conference League.

Unai Emery’s Villa will be aiming to rediscover the form which helped them go 11 league games unbeaten before last weekend’s 1-0 loss to Wolves.

Julen Lopetegui’s side have the opportunity to put the dampeners on another European hopeful this week as they visit Old Trafford.

Today’s Premier League results and fixtures

Saturday 13 May

  • Leeds 1-1 Newcastle
  • Southampton vs Fulham
  • Chelsea vs Nottingham Forest
  • Aston Villa vs Tottenham
  • Man Utd vs Wolves
  • Crystal Palace vs Bournemouth

Man Utd are without a goal or a point in their last two games. Liverpool are now breathing down their neck in fifth, while Newcastle pulled away slightly more with their draw at Elland Road.

On the south coast, Southampton’s relegation will be confirmed unless they beat Fulham, although even three points is unlikely to alter the Saints’ sorry fate.

Elsewhere, Bournemouth visit Selhurst Park with hopes of confirming their survival, while the team in the worst home form host the one with the worst away form as Nottingham Forest visit Stamford Bridge.
