Arne Slot: ‘It’s obvious I would like to join Liverpool’

Arne Slot has confirmed his desire to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool and said he is confident Feyenoord will find an agreement to let him go.

i understands Liverpool formally registered their interest in Slot on Tuesday night and things have moved quickly in the following 48 hours, with sources suggesting all parties now expect a deal to be agreed “sooner rather than later”.

That confidence prompted Slot to tell ESPN before Feyenoord’s game against Go Ahead Eagles on Thursday that he wanted to move to Anfield.

“Well I think it is obvious that I would like to join Liverpool,” he said.

“I will now wait to see whether the two clubs can reach an agreement or not but I’ve got confidence that they will.

“The only thing I can say about it is that the clubs are negotiating. I am sitting in the waiting room and am waiting for what will come out.

“The clubs have to do their job and I’m waiting – as the man in the middle I have to respect that. I expect things to become clearer in the next few days.”

Liverpool have not yet struck a deal with Feyenoord but sources suggested the Dutch club were looking for close to £10m. The 45-year-old has a contract that runs until 2026 and there is no release clause in the deal, which will allow Feyenoord to dictate their terms.

But it is now clear that Slot – who will leave with the club’s best wishes after winning an Eredivise title and KNVB Cup – will be joining Liverpool sooner rather than later.

It is a bold move from the Reds, who have moved quickly after Xabi Alonso’s decision to stay at Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen.

They had shown an interest in Sporting boss Ruben Amorim but have opted for Slot, whose preferred style, ability to improve players and charisma ticks the boxes Liverpool’s hierarchy are looking for.

There is an element of risk given Slot’s success has all come in the Netherlands and Jamie Carragher likened the appointment to one that a club trying to cement a top four place would make rather than a team looking to tilt for the title.

But under Fenway Sports Group’s new CEO of football Michael Edwards, the club have been prepared to be bold in their appointment.
