Ruben Amorim will hold talks with Ruud van Nistelrooy after landing in the UK to begin life as the new Manchester United head coach.
The manager may not be permitted to take training until next week as he awaits a work permit, restricting him to a hands-off role in the meantime.
Sources told i holding talks with Van Nistelrooy about whether to stay on as an assistant would be Amorim’s top priority.
The five backroom staff who were on Amorim’s flight to Manchester – Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Paulo Barreira, Emanuel Ferro, and Jorge Vital – will head straight to the Lowry Hotel in central Manchester, where the new employees will live initially.
Amorim will instead go alone to Carrington for face-to-face talks with Van Nistelrooy, before joining his backroom staff at the hotel where Jose Mourinho lived for his entire tenure at the club.
Sources close to Van Nistelrooy admitted the legendary United striker will understand if he has to leave. Amorim has a close-knit group, who all converse in Portuguese, making it difficult for any other assistants to participate.
If Van Nistelrooy is kept on, he will likely have to accept a demotion, given Fernandes and Candido have been by Amorim’s side from the very start of his coaching career at Casa Pia, while Ferro was a crucial part of Sporting Lisbon’s recent success.
Amorim will enjoy a low-key start to life in Manchester. Where other global superpowers make a new manager’s arrival a huge spectacle, United’s minority co-owners Ineos have decided there will be no unveiling ceremony for Amorim, who, as it stands, is not due to speak to the world’s media until next week, ahead of his first game at Ipswich Town on 24 November.
Brexit has affected his first week in work, too. Club sources said that, as is completely standard for players or coaches new to the UK, Amorim will complete his visa process after arriving in the country.
Before receiving his visa, Amorim is allowed to visit Carrington for meetings. He just cannot formally start his work, ie take training, until the visa is issued.
The finalisation of his visa may not come through until next week. There is little concern around United, however, as most players are either away on international or on holiday for much of this week.
Amorim will instead hold talks with United’s new leadership structure of sporting director Dan Ashworth, technical director Jason Wilcox and CEO Omar Berrada.
The club’s approach to transfers is not expected to be high on the agenda, given predecessor Erik ten Hag spent a large portion of the available cash on several new signings, to limited success.
Sporting’s goal machine, Viktor Gyokeres, is one Amorim is expected to push for, however, most likely in the summer. The Swedish striker has a £82m release clause in his contract, but there is understood to be an agreement in place with Sporting to allow him to leave for close to the £60m mark.
