Gareth Southgate signs England contract extension to 2022 Qatar World Cup

Gareth Southgate has signed a new contract to continue as England manager until the 2022 Qatar World Cup.

The Football Association have been keen to tie him down to an extended deal for a number of months after he led the national team to the semi-finals in Russia. It equalled their best ever finish at a World Cup on foreign soil.

Southgate had been taking his time to mull over the new offer, which will see his wages rise from around £1.8million to nearer £3m, and the prospect of extending his time in charge of the national team beyond the 2020 European Championships, but has finally agreed to the new terms. His assistant Steve Holland has also agreed to stay on for the same period.

‘A privilege’

Southgate said: “I’m delighted to have the opportunity to lead the national team thorough the next two major tournaments. The job remains an incredible privilege and a true honour.”

FA chief executive Martin Glenn said: “Securing Gareth on a longer-term contact was always a priority for us. He has performed remarkably well and has given everyone the belief that England can compete on a world stage again.”
