Raheem Sterling penalty was embarrassing – but let’s not pretend cheating is new

What happened with Raheem Sterling the other night was embarrassing and it’s reopened the debate on fair play. I get annoyed because the cheating is so blatant today but it’s worth remembering that players have always cheated. They didn’t dive so much before – they more or less got their legs taken from them by defenders – but whether you call it gamesmanship or professionalism, there’s always been dishonesty.

There are going to be no morals in sport because people have to win, managers have to win. How many players appeal for a throw-in? If I know it’s a corner and I claim a goal-kick and get a goal-kick, morally should I change the ref’s mind? I never owned up. Players and clubs put referees under psychological pressure all the time and sometimes it works. I remember how Gordon Strachan used to know the referees’ names, their families’ names, even their budgies’ name, everything about them.

It won’t get any better because players are worth so much money now and, mark my words, rugby will be the same soon – players are getting better paid, so people will want them to stay on the pitch longer, getting fewer injures so the amount of tackling will go down. Money does eventually corrupt most things as we’ve seen this week with that idiot in charge of America.
