Gary Lineker has refused to apologise to Liverpool fans annoyed at his celebration of Barcelona‘s third goal in their Champions League semi-final first leg on Wednesday night.
In a video tweeted by BT Sport, the television presenter could be seen cheering wildly with Rio Ferdinand as Lionel Messi’s free-kick fizzed beyond the Liverpool wall and into the top corner.

But Lineker, who made over 100 appearances for Barcelona in the eighties, made no apology as social media judgment rained down:
“Seem to have upset a few LFC fans by celebrating greatness last night,” Lineker wrote on Twitter.
“Admittedly it was a bit cringe, but as a former player who loves FC Barcelona I make no apologies for dancing to the diminutive Dios.”
As Ian Doyle, a reporter for the Liverpool Echo pointed out: “Seen some fume over Gary Lineker and Rio Ferdinand celebrating Messi’s free-kick.
“One played for Barcelona, the other played for Manchester United. It would be a bit odd if they didn’t celebrate – especially that goal!”
