‘There. Is. Nothing. Like. Football’: Gary Lineker sums up Liverpool and Spurs wins in 5 words

Have we all caught our breath yet? Tottenham stunned Ajax in their Champions League semi-final second leg in Amsterdam last night as the North London side won 2-3 to book a ticket to the Madrid final on away goals.

It was the second comeback from an English side in successive nights, as Liverpool similarly caught Barcelona off-guard with a 4-0 win at Anfield to guarantee a place in the final.

As a result, an English side will now be crowned the winner of the Champions League, when both teams were given little chance of a spot in the final before this week.

The drama of the semi-finals compounded one of the most enthralling European knockout stages in recent memory, with Manchester United enjoying an unlikely comeback against Paris Saint-Germain in Paris and Ajax similarly overcoming a deficit to defeat holders Real Madrid in the round of last 16. Tottenham also came back to knock out Manchester City in the second leg of their quarter final tie.

It has been one bumper Champions League this season.

Reactions

The first reactions to the result from the BT Sport presenters were in the form of Lineker’s tweets expressing sheer disbelief.

Then the videos of their reactions were posted.

BT Sport commentator and former Tottenham player Jermaine Jenas said, crying in the commentary box: “I’ve never seen anything like this! Oh my God!”

Speaking in the studio, former Tottenham player and manager Glenn Hoddle said: “I’ve never been happier! And I’m so glad that I’m still around, to have seen this! I’ve got to say, being a Spurs fan since I was eight years old. What a great moment that was!”

Rio Ferdinand added: “It almost makes you speechless, what’s happened today. You need heart, you need desire, you need effort. Sometimes when you go a couple of goals down it’s about putting your heart on the line.”

After the match Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino told BT Sport interviewers: “It’s still difficult to talk. It’s so emotional. It’s amazing. Thank you to these guys, my players. They are heroes.
