KING POWER STADIUM — Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers is confident the spike in coronavirus cases in the city will not have an adverse impact on their ability to continue with Project Restart.
The government is considering putting Leicester into local lockdown following an increase in Covid-19 cases in the area.
The home secretary Priti Patel confirmed the city could see new restrictions imposed when asked on BBC One’s The Andrew Marr Show.
“That is correct,” she said. “We have seen flare-ups across the country in recent weeks, in just the last three or four weeks in particular.”
Leicester manager Rodgers, however, believes that the “bubble” the team are being kept in means that any local outbreak and restrictions will not prevent them from continuing with the 2019-20 season, which is crucial for Premier League clubs not to lose several hundred million pounds from broadcasters.
“I heard that this morning,” Rodgers said, when asked about the Leicester outbreak.
“As a football club we’re very protective of everyone involved with the club. We’re in a bubble. They’re tested twice a week, they’re in and back home again.”
Rodgers claims that players are limiting their contact with anyone outside of the football club.
The Premier League is revealing test results for every round of tests conducted and the numbers have remained low.
“A lot of the players live outside of Leicester, ” Rodgers said. “You’re always concerned nationally in terms of Covid-19 and want to ensure the rates are down. But we couldn’t be in a better place and it gives you confidence to continue.”
