Chelsea’s Beth England and Emma Hayes have both been recognised for their efforts in 2019-20 at the Women’s Super League end of season awards.
The Blues were officially crowned WSL champions last month following the suspension of the league due to the coronavirus pandemic, pipping Manchester City to the title on a points per game (PPG) basis.
Hayes was named Manager of the Season after guiding Chelsea to a third title in five seasons, while England was named the competition’s best player after scoring 14 goals and providing four assists in 15 games.
It wasn’t a clean sweep for Chelsea, though, as Arsenal striker Vivienne Miedema clinched the Golden Boot with 16 goals and Manchester City goalkeeper Ellie Roebuck claimed the Golden Glove by keeping 10 clean sheets, four more than any other player.
Barclays Women’s Super League winners in full:
Player of the Season: Beth England (Chelsea)
Manager of the Season: Emma Hayes (Chelsea)
Golden Boot: Vivienne Miedema (Arsenal)
Golden Glove: Ellie Roebuck (Manchester City)
There was a virtual award show to announce the winners hosted by Arsenal legends Kelly Smith and Ian Wright with Hayes, England, Miedema and Roebuck all recording speeches from their homes.
Although Chelsea were unbeaten and top-scored in the competition across their 15 games, they won the title in controversial circumstances after their points tally was rejigged by PPG.
City were top when the league was suspended in March but slipped down to second in the final standings as Chelsea had a superior goal difference (+6) and a game in hand.
The early cancellation of the league also meant that Liverpool were relegated with Aston Villa taking their place in the WSL next season after winning the Championship.
Currently, there is a target date of Saturday 5 September for the start of the 2020-21 season and rigorous coronavirus testing of players and coaches is already underway.
Similarly to the Premier League’s Project Restart there will be numerous rounds of testing before the league is allowed to start, the first of which was completed on Wednesday.
Of the 802 players and coaches tested from the WSL and Championship clubs this month, only one person tested positive for Covid-19 in the opening round.
At the end of June, the Premier League pledged £1m to the WSL in order to carry out testing and consequently, get the league up and running as quickly as possible.
Chelsea have strengthened their squad ahead of the upcoming campaign, signing Melanie Luopolz from Bayern Munich and Niamh Charles from Liverpool, while Chloe Kelly has joined City from Everton.
