Chelsea will wear their new-look shirt for the 2020-21 season when they take on West Ham at the London Stadium on Wednesday night.
With the Premier League running into July for the first time in its history, clubs have had to deal with the unusual circumstance of contracts designed to cover the 2019-20 season expiring at the end of June.
Some players have refused to sign short-term extensions in order to complete the season with their current club, while Chelsea have managed to convince the likes of Willian and Pedro to remain at Stamford Bridge a little longer, despite their original deals expiring on 30 June.
In non-playing matters though, they will now appear in the new shirt for the 2020-21 season after Chelsea’s £200million contract with Yokohama Tyres expired at the end of June.
New partner Three, one of the UK’s biggest telecommunications companies, appeared on hoardings and the outside of the Chelsea stadium earlier this week, ahead of the start of a three-year deal thought to be worth in the region of £40m a year.
Three are also thought to have promised to make Stamford Bridge the first 5G-enabled stadium in the Premier League as part of the partnership.
The most public part of the sponsorship though will be on the front of the shirt, which also sports a new design that the club claim is “inspired by west London’s long association with master tailors and their exquisite craftsmanship”.
“The kit is really, really smart – very Chelsea,” said striker Tammy Abraham.
“You can see the story behind the kit with how it looks and all the little touches that remind you of a good suit.
“I think we will certainly be the best-dressed team next season.”
The shirt will also feature dark bloke tape running down the torso sporting the phrase “The Pride of London”, a title that will be put to the test when they take on city rivals West Ham in their first game in the strip.
