England vs Scotland player ratings: Billy Gilmour stars but Harry Kane struggles in goalless Euro 2020 draw

England failed to build on their opening game win against Croatia after being held to a goalless draw by a determined Scotland team at Wembley.

John Stones hit the post with a header early on, but otherwise, Scotland created better opportunities with Che Adams heavily involved.

The point has inched England closer to the knockout stages and given Scotland hope of making it too after they were beaten by the Czech Republic in their first game.

Here’s how the players from each side rated.

Jordan Pickford7/10

Made a fine stop to keep out a skidding O’Donnell effort down to his right but was fortunate Adams was unable to convert the rebound. Dealt well with crosses into the box.

Reece James – 7/10

Brought in for Kyle Walker to provide a greater attacking threat and whipped a couple of devilish crosses into the box. Headed a Dykes volley away from danger, although it was veering off target.

John Stones – 6/10

Made a crucial block to deny Adams’ goalbound effort early on and then rattled the bar with a header shortly after when perhaps he should have scored.

Tyrone Mings – 7/10

Looked all over the place in both warm-up games but has looked solid at the tournament itself. Made a vital glancing header to divert the ball away from Dykes inside the six-yard-box.

Luke Shaw – 6/10

Slashed an ambitious half-volley high and wide via a one-two with Mount after charging into the box. Defended well and offered England natural width on the left.

Kalvin Phillips – 6/10

Didn’t manage to influence proceedings as much as he managed against Croatia when he was the best player on the pitch.

Declan Rice – 6/10

Used the ball resourcefully but was a little too safe with his passing when England required more penetration from midfield.

Phil Foden – 5/10

Some lovely touches and dribbles but again was too much on the periphery for England’s liking. Hasn’t yet the tournament alight as many had anticipated before it began.

Mason Mount – 7/10

Looked the most likely to create something in the first half and stung the palms of Marshall with an effort from range shortly after the break.

Raheem Sterling – 5/10

Dispossessed McTominay and teed up Mount for an early chance. Sterling’s pace in transition caused Scotland a couple of issues in the first half but he faded as the game wore on.

Harry Kane – 4/10

Another disappointing game for the England captain who has so far been unable to translate his 2020-21 form into Euro 2020. Only had 19 touches in total before being taken off with 15 minutes remaining.

Subs:

Jack Grealish – 6/10

Finally got his first taste of Euro 2020 action as a second half substitute. It looked set up for him to be the match-winner but was unable to make a decisive impact.

Marcus Rashford – 6/10

Offered more movement than Kane but didn’t see much of the ball. Dominic Calvert-Lewin may have been a better option.

Scotland

David Marshall – 6/10

Didn’t have a save to make in the first half but made a good stop to keep Mount out at the start of the second. Needed a quiet evening after being humiliated by Patrik Schick and got one.

Scott McTominay – 6/10

Dawdled on the ball on the edge of his own box and was fortunate to see Mount spurn the resulting chance. Recovered well after that early error and acquitted himself well in an unfamiliar position.

Grant Hanley – 7/10

Led a youthful backline expertly and made an important tackle to prevent the fresh-legged Rashford from racing through on goal.

Kieran Tierney – 8/10

Looped a cross to the far post for O’Donnell to attack for Scotland’s best chance in the first half. Excels in a left-sided centre back role for Scotland and put out numerous fires throughout the game.

Stephen O’Donnell – 6/10

O’Donnell almost repaid Steve Clarke’s faith amid criticism by teeing up an early chance for Adams and then forced a fine stop from Pickford on the volley. Booked for bringing Grealish down.

Billy Gilmour – 8/10

The 20-year-old struggled with the pace of the game initially but grew into it impressively as the match progressed. Completed 40 of his 44 attempted passes before going off after 75 minutes. A coming-of-age performance from the Glaswegian.

Callum McGregor – 7/10

An industrious display from the Celtic midfielder. Kept the ball impressively, completing 94 per cent of his attempts.

John McGinn – 6/10

Foolishly got himself booked for complaining to the notoriously card-happy Mateu Lahoz after 15 minutes. Picked up a knock after a tangle with Kane but soldiered on.

Andy Robertson – 7/10

Offered typical drive and energy down the left flank and made a crucial intervention to deny Foden a chance. Had a heart-in-mouth moment when Sterling went to ground inside the box but was given the benefit of the doubt.

Che Adams – 6/10

Recalled to the starting line-up and almost opened the scoring inside the opening four minutes. Was unfortunate that a couple of half-chances from rebounds didn’t stop his way. Slashed a half-volley over the bar from a Robertson cross. A handful but wasteful in front of goal.

Lyndon Dykes – 5/10

Did well to fashion a shooting opportunity for himself with the blocked effort almost dropping for Adams to score. Struggled to hold the ball up at times.

Subs:

Stuart Armstrong – 6/10

An attacking change from Steve Clark. Armstrong led a couple of counter-attacks but didn’t have a game-changing impact.

Kevin Nisbet – N/A

Not enough time to make an impact.
