It says much for England’s performance against Scotland that their best hope of victory was from a penalty that never happened.
The Three Lions were ponderous, sluggish and lacking in creativity throughout the Euro 2020 clash at Wembley on Friday night.
Scotland had the better chances and arguably deserved to take all three points but it did look as if the home side might snatch victory towards the end of the match when Raheem Sterling went down in the box.
Jinking past Andy Robertson and towards the byline, the England forward went sprawling across the turf and appealed for a penalty.
Referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz was uninterested and waved away the protests but the feeling was different from the England contingent in the ITV commentary box.
“Well, VAR will be having a look at this one,” said former England and Arsenal full-back Lee Dixonw with some certainty.
“[Sterling] just tricks [Robertson] into putting his foot in. He’s stood on his foot. Whether or not that warrants enough for him to go down… His foot comes in, he stands on his toe.
“I tell you what. There is a tiny trip there.”
The verdict from former Scotland striker Ally McCoist? “Absolutely no chance.”
Former Premier League referee Peter Walton took a similar view.
“Well for once in my life I am agreeing with Ally McCoist,” he said.
“That’s no chance of a penalty kick for me. Yes, Sterling does get slightly tripped but he has gone down far too easily for a penalty kick there.”
