Why is it called Euro 2020? Why tournament has kept original name despite being moved to 2021

Euro 2020 is currently well underway, with teams battling it out in the groups to reach the round-of-16.

But fans are still finding it strange to see the Euro 2020 branding slapped across all the stadiums when the competition is taking place in 2021.

The original tournament was supposed to take place last summer, but like the Tokyo Olympics, it was postponed by a year.

However, Uefa made the decision not to change its name, and keep the Euro 2020 branding.

Why the tournament kept its name

Uefa decided shortly after the tournament’s postponement in April last year that it would retain its original name, as a “reminder” of the pandemic, as well as due to a lot of the branded material already having been produced.

It said in a statement: “Following the postponement of Uefa Euro 2020 to the summer of 2021, and after a thorough internal review as well as several discussions with partners, the Uefa Executive Committee has decided that the tournament will still be known as Uefa Euro 2020.

“This decision allows Uefa to keep the original vision of the tournament, which was set to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the European Football Championship (1960–2020).

“It will furthermore serve as a reminder of how the whole football family came together to respond to the extraordinary circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic, and of the difficult times that Europe, and the world, had to go through in 2020.”

At the time, Uefa probably did not expect the 2021 tournament to continue to be affected by the pandemic.

“This choice is in line with Uefa’s commitment to make Uefa Euro 2020 sustainable and not to generate additional amounts of waste. A lot of branded material had already been produced by the time of the tournament’s postponement. A name change for the event would have meant the destruction and reproduction of such items,” the statement added.
