Jurgen Klopp: FA launches probe into Liverpool manager’s altercation with referee Paul Tierney

The Football Association has launched a probe into the altercation between Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and referee Paul Tierney, i can reveal.

The governing body will listen to audio of a discussion between Klopp and Tierney, when the referee showed him a yellow card, that the Liverpool manager claimed afterwards was “not OK” and is expected to write to the German coach requesting his view of the incident.

Klopp is facing an FA charge for comments he made about Tierney following Liverpool’s 4-3 thriller against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

The Liverpool manager was shown a yellow card after screaming at fourth official John Brooks when Diogo Jota struck an injury-time winner then accused the referee of having an agenda against his club. Klopp was also unhappy with a decision early in the game.

“We have our history with Tierney, I really don’t know what he has against us,” Klopp said. “He has said there [are] no problems but that cannot be true.

“How he looks at me, I don’t understand it. In England nobody has to clarify these situations, it’s really tricky and hard to understand. What he said to me when he gave me the yellow card is not OK.”

The PGMOL, the body in charge of English refereeing, “strongly” refuted Klopp’s claim after listening back to a recording of the incident. All officials wear microphones to communicate during matches and the feed is recorded.

FA rules state that the governing body can charge a “participant” if their comments imply bias or attack the integrity of officials. Something likely to act against Klopp is his list of previous incidents involving Tierney, as the track record of the “participant” is taken into consideration when deciding whether to charge or merely warn them over their conduct.

It is claimed that in 2020 Tierney told Klopp to “get over it” after he missed a foul when Liverpool played Aston Villa. In another Liverpool game against Spurs, in 2021, after disagreeing with a series of decisions Klopp told Tierney, “I have no problem with any referees, only you.”

Klopp already served a one-match touchline ban this season after screaming in the face of the fourth official during a game against Manchester City last October. Klopp was initially fined £30,000 but the suspension was added after the FA appealed the sanction.

Meanwhile, referee charity Ref Support UK has called for the League Managers’ Association to start condemning the touchline behaviour of managers to help stamp out the problem.

“We welcome the PGMOL’s statement on the behaviour of Jurgen Klopp at yesterday’s Liverpool v Tottenham game at Anfield and their swift release of a public statement of support,” Ref Support UK said in a statement.

“The behaviour of some managers on the touch line is disgraceful and has been for decades yet The Leagues Manager Association (LMA) appear to say and do nothing to address the problem. They never publicly condemn such behaviour.

“It is therefore fair to ask, why do the LMA exist? Where are their public statements on unacceptable behaviour by their members?

“They appear to do nothing to address the behaviour of their members whose actions are mimicked at grassroots level by managers and spectators where children are refereeing and have to deal with this replicated behaviour.

“Their silence is shameless and gives the perception that they condone such behaviour.

“It’s time for The LMA, as a major stakeholder in the game, to step up and stop their silence on this huge problem in the game.”

A PGMOL spokesperson said in response to Klopp’s claims: “PGMOL is aware of the comments made by Jurgen Klopp after his side’s fixture with Tottenham Hotspur.

“Match officials in the Premier League are recorded in all games via a communications system.

“Having fully reviewed the audio of referee Paul Tierney from today’s fixture, we can confirm he acted in a professional manner throughout including when issuing the caution to the Liverpool manager.

“So, therefore, we strongly refute any suggestion that Tierney’s actions were improper.”
