Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho will train away from the first team set-up “pending resolution” of his ongoing rift with manager Erik ten Hag.
In a statement on Thursday afternoon, ahead of the team’s upcoming Premier League match with Brighton on Saturday, United said: “Jadon Sancho will remain on a personal training programme away from the first-team group, pending resolution of a squad discipline issue.”
Sancho was dropped by Ten Hag for United’s match-up against Arsenal earlier this month, with the manager indicating the decision was made due to Sancho underperforming in training.
Ten Hag said: “Jadon, on his performances in training we did not select him.
“You have to reach a level every day at Manchester United and we can make choices in the front line. So for this game he was not selected.”
Sources close to the player told i that they feel the player has not been given a fair ride by his manager this season, and that other forward options who are struggling just as much as Sancho keep “getting a game every week”.
That feeling was reportedly behind the 23-year-old England forward’s decision to respond to Ten Hag’s comments following the team’s loss in that game.
In a since-deleted post on X (formerly Twitter) last Sunday, Sancho claimed to have been made into “a scapegoat”.
“Please don’t believe everything you read,” he wrote.
“I will not allow people saying things that is completely untrue, I have conducted myself very well in training this week.
“I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won’t go into, I’ve been a scapegoat for a long time which isn’t fair!”
Sancho arrived in Manchester from Borussia Dortmund on a £73m fee in 2021 after years of being courted by the club and its fans, but has since struggled to nail down a consistent starting spot at United, notching just nine goals and six assists in 58 Premier League matches.
Last season, he took an extended break last season for “physical and mental health” reasons. Four games into the new campaign, 77 minutes spread across three substitute appearances are all he has been afforded.
