Man Utd insist they are taking Antony abuse allegations ‘seriously’ as police investigate

Manchester United say they are taking the domestic abuse allegations against Antony “seriously” in their first public comment since he was accused of assaulting his ex-partner.

The club are under pressure to act after the £84m Brazil winger was accused by Gabriela Cavallin of physical assaults and intimidation. Police investigations in Manchester and Sao Paulo are underway but Antony strenuously denies the allegations.

Brazil dropped Antony for their World Cup qualifiers this week and United are understood to be keeping the matter under review.

“Manchester United acknowledges the allegations made against Antony and notes that the Police are conducting enquiries,” a statement released on Wednesday lunchtime read.

“Pending further information, the club will be making no further comments. As a club we are taking this matter seriously, with consideration of the impact of these allegations and subsequent reporting will have on survivors of abuse.”

The club are yet to clarify whether Antony remains available to play but he was included in their Champions League squad, which was announced on Tuesday.

As i reported yesterday, campaigners have called for the club and football authorities to introduce a blanket policy on what to do when domestic abuse allegations are made and to involve trained professionals in their decision-making process.
