The 2023-24 Carabao Cup campaigns of eight more Premier League sides began this week, with 12 top flight teams still vying for a place in the fourth-round draw tonight.
After a bye due to their involvement in European competitions, Manchester United, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Brighton, Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle United and West Ham entered this year’s domestic cup in the third round, joining the other nine Premier League teams who had progressed to that stage of the competition.
Among the first set of third-round games, played on Tuesday night, defending champions Manchester United breezed past Crystal Palace with a 3-0 victory to secure their spot in the fourth round.
Raphael Varane and summer signings Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat returned from their respective injuries to make the Red Devils’ starting line-up – a debut, for the latter – as Alejandro Garnacho, Casemiro and Anthony Martial provided the goals that gave Erik ten Hag‘s side back-to-back wins for the first time this season.
There was another big win for a top flight side elsewhere in Manchester, as Burnley matched their total league goal tally this season in one night with a 4-0 win over League Two side Salford to punch their own ticket to the fourth round.
However, Crystal Palace were joined in their third-round exit by Wolves and Luton, who lost to Ipswich and Exeter, respectively.
That trio of top flight sides will play no further part in this year’s Carabao Cup, joining Sheffield United, who were knocked out on penalties in the second round by League One side Lincoln City, Tottenham Hotspur – also beaten on penalties, by Fulham – and Nottingham Forest, who were handed an early league cup exit by Burnley in the last round.

- Exeter 1-0 Luton
- Bradford 0-2 Middlesbrough

What’s on tonight?
On Wednesday night, nine more games feature the likes of Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool, as well as a clash between Premier League leaders Manchester City and Eddie Howe’s high-flying Magpies.
Four of those games – City vs Newcastle, Arsenal vs Brentford, Aston Villa vs Everton, and Chelsea vs Brighton – showcase all-Premier League match-ups, while Liverpool will play a Leicester side that, although freshly relegated to England’s second division, sit top of the Championship with seven wins from eight games this season.

Just like the headline match beforehand, it will be broadcast live on Sky Sports, while the draw will also be streamed, for free, on the Sky Sports Football YouTube channel, as the victors from Wednesday’s slate of fixtures join Manchester United, Burnley and the rest of Tuesday’s winners in finding out their next opponents.
