Where are England playing Ukraine? Why the Wroclaw Stadium in Poland was chosen to host Euro 2024 qualifier

England return to Euro 2024 qualifying action this weekend when they take on Ukraine.

Gareth Southgate‘s side have won all four Group C qualifiers to date and will hope to continue their unbeaten record, which would all but secure their place in next summer’s competition.

A win would take them nine points clear at the top of the group. They can qualify next week if they beat Ukraine, Italy also beat Ukraine on Tuesday, and North Macedonia fail to win against either Italy on Friday or Malta on Tuesday.

When is England vs Ukraine?

England will take on Ukraine on Saturday 9 September, kicking off at 5pm BST.

The match is being broadcast live on Channel 4, with coverage beginning at 4pm. You can also watch online via the Channel 4 website here.

England will then play Scotland in a friendly at Hampden Park on Tuesday 12 September, with kick off at 7.45pm.

Where is the match being played?

The match is being played at the Wroclaw Stadium in Poland. It has been moved to a neutral venue due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, with it not deemed safe to play in Kyiv.

The 45,000-capacity stadium was originally built for Euro 2012, which Poland co-hosted with Ukraine.

Since the Russian invasion last year, Ukraine have played “home” games in the Polish cities of Lodz and Krakow as well as Trnava in Slovakia.

What should we expect from the game?

England beat Ukraine 2-0 at Wembley back in March, and are expected to take care of business again on Saturday, though Ukraine have changed managers since then with Sergei Rebrov now in charge.

Ukraine also have Arsenal defender Oleksandr Zinchenko available, and come into the game determined to strengthen their grip on second place in qualification race ahead of a tricky trip to Italy next week.

One of the biggest storylines for England will be the potential inclusion of Jordan Henderson. If he plays it will be first time Henderson has represented England since he completed his controversial move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ettifaq in the summer.

Having been a prominent supporter of LGBTQ+ rights before leaving for Saudi Arabia, Henderson has come in for criticism and some fans have suggested turning their back on the former Liverpool captain if and when he takes to the field.

There are possible debuts in store for Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah, 24, and Chelsea defender Levi Colwill, 20, two players who could be the future of the squad.

Nketiah has a goalscoring pedigree at international level with a record 16 goals for the England Under-21s. He has started the season well for his club and will be aiming to show he can be in the conversation for a supporting role to captain Harry Kane come the finals next summer.

Colwill said it was a “dream come true” to make the squad. When asked if his aim is to be called up again next summer, he said: “Of course. Playing for Chelsea – one of the biggest clubs in the world – it’s got to be my aim to hopefully be in the England team come the Euros.

“Obviously it’s still a long time until that comes so I’ve just got to keep working hard, pushing myself and let’s see what happens next.”
