By Lucy Wilde | Sir Jim Ratcliffe has identified Paul Mitchell to take over from John Murtough as director of football as he prepares for life at Manchester United.
Mitchell, Tottenham Hotspur’s former head of recruitment, has also worked with MK Dons, Southampton and RB Leipzig, and left his most recent job at Monaco in June.
It is understood the 41-year-old has already moved to the north-west of England, with attention now fixed on what he can bring to the table at Old Trafford.
Here, i takes a look at some of his best signings to date.
Sadio Mane
Mane was scooped up by Mitchell for Southampton in a £10m deal from RB Salzburg in September 2014 after tallying an impressive 45 goals and 32 assists in 87 games.
The Senegal international went on to sign for Liverpool, scoring 120 goals in 269 appearances and winning both the Champions League and Premier League.
He now plays for Al-Nassr alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in the Saudi Pro League.
Dusan Tadic
Southampton signed the Serbia international for £10.0m in the same window as Mane, Tadic becoming the first signing under Ronald Koeman.
The 34-year-old later signed for Ajax.
Toby Alderweireld
In tandem with Mane and Tadic, the centre-back arrived at Southampton from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan.
The Belgian international arrived as a Champions League finalist and played 26 games for the Saints, earning a move to Tottenham in 2015. In fact he followed Mitchell to White Hart Lane, as by then he had taken up a post in north London.
Alderweireld currently plays for Belgian Pro League club Royal Antwerp.
Dele Alli
Alli signed for Spurs from MK Dons for £5m in January 2015 before being loaned back to the League One side for the rest of the campaign.
The midfielder scored 67 goals in 269 games and became an England regular, before he eventually left for Everton in 2022.
Heung-Min Son
Tottenham signed Son for £22m from Bayer Leverkusen in August 2015.
He has gone on to become the club’s captain, recently surpassing the 150-goal mark.
Kieran Trippier
Spurs signed the right-back from Burnley in June 2015. He spent four seasons there before moving to Atletico Madrid, where he won La Liga.
Trippier became Mauricio Pochettino’s first-choice right-back after Kyle Walker’s move to Manchester City in 2017 and was part of the Spurs side that reached the 2019 Champions League final.
The England international moved back to the Premier League in January 2022, becoming Newcastle United’s first signing under Saudi ownership.
Amadou Haidara
Midfielder Haidara moved from Salzburg to Leipzig in January 2019.
He has been linked with Manchester United in the past, but according to his current club, he had no interest in a move last January.
However, the Mali international was a boyhood United fan, so a future move may not be totally off the cards.
Christopher Nkunku
The 25-year-old signed for RB Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain in July 2019. Nkunku was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2021-22.
During his time there he scored 70 goals and this summer, he became the first signing of the Pochettino era at Chelsea in a £52m deal. He has been sidelined with a knee injury since pre-season.
