West Ham playmaker Jarrod Bowen and Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins have been recalled to the England squad as Gareth Southgate makes three changes for upcoming games against Australia and Italy.
Manchester City defender John Stones is the third name to return to the fold after recovering from an injury that has kept him out of action so far this season, with the injured trio of Ben Chilwell, Callum Wilson and Eberechi Eze dropping out.
There is no place once again for 82-cap Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling, while Mason Mount also misses out despite returning to action with Manchester United.
Harry Maguire and Kalvin Phillips retain their spots despite having played just 116 and 167 minutes of football for their respective clubs this season. Uncapped Levi Colwill and Eddie Nketiah are also part of the 26-man squad and Arsenal star Bukayo Saka gets the nod despite fitness concerns.
The penultimate camp of 2023 kicks off with a Wembley friendly against Australia before Italy’s visit for a Euro 2024 qualifier.
For Watkins, this call-up marks a return to the England squad for the first time since March 2022, and comes just days after Southgate watched the striker score a hat-trick and notch two assists in Aston Villa’s 6-1 win against Brighton.
Bowen’s blistering start to the season, with five goals in his opening seven Premier League matches, has earned the Hammers midfielder a first national team call-up since September 2022, but there is no room in the squad for his new club teammate James Ward-Prowse, who has two goals and three assists in six appearances.
Other in-form names absent from Southgate’s latest group include Newcastle trio Nick Pope, Sean Longstaff and Dan Burn.
Manchester City youngster Rico Lewis’s stellar performance against RB Leipzig in the Champions League on Wednesday night seems to have come too late to warrant his selection for the national team just yet.
