UK and Ireland set to host Euro 2028 after Turkey withdraw bid

The UK and Ireland are set to be confirmed as Euro 2028 hosts after Turkey, the only other other bidder for the competition, withdrew from the process.

Uefa has confirmed that Turkey can bid alongside Italy unopposed for Euro 2032.

The decision will be ratified at a ceremony in Nyon on 10 October, where representatives from the UK and Ireland will still be required to perform a full presentation.

There will be pressure on the English FA to provide assurances over security following the ugly scenes that marred the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.

It was initially feared that could count against any UK and Ireland bids for future tournaments; the 2030 World Cup was initially targeted but it was confirmed last year that the bid had been abandoned, with the national associations preferring to focus on Euro 2028 instead.

As it stands while England, the Republic of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would all host matches, it is possible that not all of them will take part in the tournament.

If any of them should fail to qualify, under Uefa rules only two nations can be awarded “host spots”.

Host stadia

  • Wembley Stadium (London)
  • Principality Stadium (Cardiff)
  • Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London)
  • Etihad Stadium (Manchester)
  • Everton Stadium (Liverpool)
  • St James’ Park (Newcastle)
  • Villa Park (Birmingham)
  • Hampden Park (Glasgow)
  • Aviva Stadium (Dublin)
  • Casement Park (Belfast)

In the current qualifying groups, only England and Scotland are poised to go through, with three games left to play each.

Wembley would host the final, with the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Everton’s new ground, Villa Park, St James’ Park and the Etihad the other Premier League grounds to be used.
