Frank Lampard’s Coventry thrash Plymouth 4-0 to pile pressure on Wayne Rooney

Frank Lampard‘s Coventry City thrashed Plymouth Argyle 4-0 on Boxing Day to pile pressure on counterpart Wayne Rooney.

A brace from Josh Eccles plus goals for Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Ephron Mason-Clark condemned Plymouth to a fifth defeat in six games as Lampard came out on top in the battle of former England teammates.

Rooney took charge of the Pigrims in May following a disastrous three-month spell at Birmingham which propelled the Blues towards relegation.

And his time on the south coast has hardly gone better. Plymouth are rock bottom at the halfway stage of the Championship season, having conceded 49 goals in their 22 games – 10 more than any other team.

Rooney was reportedly on the brink of the sack following a 6-1 defeat to Norwich and 4-0 loss to Bristol City last month.

However, the club’s chairman Simon Hallett rubbished that suggestion at a fans’ forum in early December.

“What we are going to do is not think about getting rid of him and changing him,” Hallett said.

“There are no conversations going on about replacing Wayne but there are conversations going on about how we can support him to help him become the great coach that we think is in there.”

Rooney spoke last week of needing to strengthen in the January transfer window, with veteran Andre Gray the only fit striker in his squad for the Boxing Day clash.
