Liverpool strike hammer blow in title race with imperious win over Man City

Man City 0-2 Liverpool (Salah 14′, Szoboszlai 37′)

Liverpool struck a hammer blow in the Premier League title race with an imperious victory away to Manchester City.

Goals from Mohamed Salah and Dominik Szoboszlai sealed a 2-0 win for the Reds, who moved 11 points clear of closest rivals Arsenal following their defeat to West Ham on Saturday, albeit having played a game more.

In what should have been a serious test of their mettle following a string of shaky results, Arne Slot’s men made a trip to Etihad Stadium look like a walk in the park.

The opener came straight from the training ground, Szoboszlai dropping short for a corner and flicking the ball round the corner for Salah, who was hovering in space around the penalty spot and fired the ball past Ederson via a heavy deflection.

Salah then turned provider as Szoboszlai doubled Liverpool’s lead before half-time, dancing down the wing before laying it off to the Hungarian midfielder whose slotted finish wrongfooted Ederson.

Liverpool took complete control in a relatively low-key second half, with Curtis Jones having a third goal chalked off by VAR for offside.

The result leaves City in fourth but level on points with Newcastle following their victory over fellow Champions League hopefuls Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

First Madrid and now this, Manchester City eviscerated by the great footballing houses they sought to join. The dismantling against Liverpool here was every bit as emphatic as that at the Bernabeu, City lowered by much the better team.

Worst still, none of this was a surprise. The defeat in the Champions League was City’s 13th in 26 matches. The 14th was no less painful since it saw hegemony passing from Manchester to Liverpool, the visitors effectively confirming the end of City’s unprecedented domination of the Premier League.

Errors were everywhere, each imperfection a micro tear in Pep Guardiola’s soul. The arms went up repeatedly, turning to his bench to vent his frustration, to process the load.

City were faced with a team propelled by the same zeitgeist, the same elemental force that Guardiola’s team once exhibited. The calm refusal to panic, the composure, the confidence to wait that was once City’s is now entirely Liverpool’s.
