Harry Redknapp has been filmed calling England manager Thomas Tuchel “a German spy” and even appearing to mimic a Nazi salute on stage at a London event.
The former Tottenham, West Ham and Portsmouth manager, who was most recently in charge of Birmingham City, said he thought Tuchel had been “sent over to f**k us up”.
Tuchel, the England men’s team’s first ever German manager, has so far won both of his games in charge, beating Albania and Latvia 2-0 and 3-0 respectively last weekend.
“I’ll be honest with you, I think he’s a German spy,” footage published by The Guardian shows Redknapp saying in response to a question about whether the FA was right to appoint Tuchel.
“I’m telling you. Seriously, he’s been sent over to f**k us up. He has. I’m telling ya, he’s like Lord Haw Haw in the war – ‘We have your best soldiers captured’ and all that.”
In front of an appreciative audience roaring with laughter, Redknapp goes on to imagine Tuchel being told to “go over and ruin that team” before shouting “ja”, yes in German, and raising his left arm in a manner that appears to resemble a Nazi salute.
Redknapp, 78, has been linked with the England job on several occasions, after the departure of Steve McLaren and Fabio Capello in particular, but has never been appointed.
The i Paper has approached Redknapp and the FA for comment but they did not respond in the time available.
In 2019, an FA panel returned a verdict of “not proven” when Crystal Palace goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey was accused of making a Nazi salute when pictured on a night out with his team-mates.
Hennessey said he had “waved and shouted at the person taking the picture to get on with it” and “put my hand over my mouth to make the sound carry”. The Wales international also claimed that he did not know what a Nazi salute was and showed, according to the FA panel, a “lamentable” level of ignorance about “anything to do with Hitler, Fascism and the Nazi regime”.
