Manchester United have sacked Ruben Amorim after 14 months in charge.
Amorim’s final game was the 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road, after which he publicly criticised the board and insisted he wanted to be “manager” not “coach.
United sit sixth in the Premier League after 20 games.
Former midfielder and current Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher will take over on an interim basis and will be in the dugout for the trip to Burnley on Wednesday night.
In a statement, the club said: “Ruben Amorim has departed his role as head coach of Manchester United.
“Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a Uefa Europa League Final in Bilbao in May. With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change.
“This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish. The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”
On Sunday, Amorim held an explosive press conference in which he called on the scouting department and sporting director “to do their job”, adding: “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United. And that is clear.
“I know that my name is not [Thomas] Tuchel, it’s not [Antonio] Conte, it’s not [Jose] Mourinho but I’m the manager of Manchester United. And it’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decides to change.”
Amorim took over from Erik ten Hag in November 2024, arriving as a highly-rated Primeira Liga winner from Sporting CP.

However, in a turbulent reign he averaged just over a point per game and failed to deliver any silverware, losing the Europa League final to Tottenham in Bilbao last May.
Amorim was under serious pressure last season but was granted a summer transfer window in which he spent £216m on Benjamin Sesko, Senne Lammens, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.
United have won just eight league games this term and Amorim admitted the club are not likely to be active in the January market.
