Michael Carrick a ‘top contender’ to take over as Man Utd interim boss

Michael Carrick is among the top contenders to be interim Manchester United head coach until the end of the season, when the club will look to appoint a permanent successor to Ruben Amorim.

Amorim’s shock sacking was announced on Monday morning following a meeting between the Portuguese, CEO Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox.

While the situation is described as a fluid one, given nobody expected to be hunting a new manager until a few days ago, The i Paper understands the current plan is for Darren Fletcher to take charge of Wednesday’s trip to Burnley and then potentially the weekend clash with Brighton.

After that, the United hierarchy are likely to appoint an interim coach until the end of the season, giving them time to identify a long-term Amorim successor.

One of the names senior figures have had in mind should such a scenario unfold is Carrick. The former United midfielder left his role as Middlesbrough boss at the end of last season.

It is unclear at this stage whether Carrick would be interested in the role, but United are expected to make an approach in the coming days.

More to follow.
