Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has apologised after being charged with drink driving, following his arrest in the early hours of Friday morning in west London.
In a statement, the 31-year-old World Cup-winning goalkeeper for the French national team said: “I wish to apologise wholeheartedly to my family, the club, my team-mates, the manager and all of the supporters.
“Drink driving is completely unacceptable. I take full responsibility for my actions and it is not the example I wish to set.”
Court date
Lloris is likely to face internal action at Tottenham. “The club takes matters such as this extremely seriously and it will be dealt with internally,” a spokesman said.
Lloris, who joined Spurs from Olympique Lyonnais in 2012 and has made 254 appearances, has been ordered to appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court next month.
A Metropolitan Police statement read: “A man has been charged following a routine patrol stop in Gloucester Place, W1.
“Hugo Lloris, 31, of East Finchley was charged with drink driving on Friday, 24 August. He has been bailed to return to Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 11 September.”
He did not train on Friday morning with the club and news of his arrest broke too late for manager Mauricio Pochettino‘s pre-match press conference for the upcoming match against Manchester United.
