Roy Hodgson left nobody in any doubt over his feelings on the penalty which sent Liverpool on their way to victory against Crystal Palace on Monday evening.
Right at the end of the first half, Mohamed Salah picked up the ball in the Crystal Palace box and went down under pressure from Mamadou Sakho. Replays appeared to show a light touch across Salah’s ankles as Sakho stretched to get the ball, but a touch as Salah was jinking at speed nonetheless.
“I do think it’s a penalty when Max Meyer gets wiped out in the last minute by [Virgil] van Dijk,” Hodgson said in his post-match press conference when asked his thoughts on the decisive spot kick.
“Sometimes refereeing decisions go against you, it’s frustrating and a cause for disappointment and anger,” he added.
‘You have to forgive me for saying what I feel’
Hodgson was clearly furious with Michael Oliver’s decision to award Salah a penalty, which was subsequently converted by James Milner. “It’s not a penalty, it’s not a penalty. I’ve been in football a long time, if that’s a penalty the game has changed beyond all recognition.
“There’s no way [Sakho] is looking to foul the player,” he went on. “If nobody else sees that I’ll be the pariah and if everyone else sees it differently, I’ll accept that.”
Liverpool’s win leaves them second in the Premier League, while Palace drop down to 10th. “You have to forgive me for saying what I feel, which is that I don’t think we gave away a penalty,” Hodgson said. “And I don’t think Liverpool deserved to be leading at half-time thanks to a penalty.”
