Tottenham ensured Manchester United’s woeful start to the season got even worse on Monday night to increase the pressure on Jose Mourinho.
Two goals in two second-half minutes from Harry Kane and Lucas Moura stunned Old Trafford before the Brazilian added the third.
Mourinho lined up with a back three, none of whom had featured yet this season, including midfielder Ander Herrera – an experiment that clearly failed.
Here’s how the teams rated:
Manchester United
David De Gea: Could perhaps have done more for Kane’s opener but did everything else he could to keep United in it. Let down by those in front of him, again 6/10
Antonio Valencia: Difficult night for the United captain on the right flank. Did nothing of note – good or bad 5/10
Luke Shaw: One of the few positives to United’s poor start to the season. Continued fine form up and down left flank. Looks likely to return to the England squad 7/10
Chris Smalling: Excellent tackle to dispossess Dele Alli when running back towards his own goal but then skinned by Moura for the third 5/10
Phil Jones: Lucky not to give a penalty away for a shove on Lucas Moura and then questionable marking for Kane’s opener. Went off injured for equally bad Lindelof 4/10
Ander Herrera: Played in a back three and was caught out several times with some sloppy defensive positioning early on. Hooked after 55 minutes and shouldn’t play there again 3/10
Fred: Nearly handed United the perfect start and then created another shooting opportunity after some wonderful footwork but as the game progressed 6/10
Nemanja Matic: Hasn’t quite dovetailed as nicely with Fred in midfield as Mourinho will have hoped 6/10
Paul Pogba: Relatively anonymous and could well come in for criticism for failing to grab game by the scruff of the neck 6/10
Jesse Lingard: Lively presence accompanying Lukaku up front and looks to be continuing good form from World Cup 7/10
Romelu Lukaku: Missed an open goal with the score at 0-0 and still looks to be getting up to pace after the World Cup 6/10
Tottenham
Hugo Lloris: An easy enough return following his arrest for drink driving. Had relatively little do 6/10
Kieran Trippier: Shaw more eye-catching on that wing but the England star is always dangerous with his delivery and set up several chances for teammates 6/10
Toby Alderweireld: Made a crucial block to prevent Jesse Lingard from scoring. A solid presence at the back 7/10
Jan Vertonghen: Paired well with compatriot Alderweireld 7/10
Danny Rose: Horrible blunder to put Lukaku in on goal and looks likely to lose his place in the England squad to Shaw 5/10
Mousa Dembele: Quietly went about his work as Spurs tore United apart 7/10
Eric Dier: Solid enough in midfield 7/10
Dele Alli: A constant threat going forward and should have got his name on the scoresheet. Looks to be getting back to his best 8/10
Christian Eriksen: Found plenty of spaces between United’s five defenders and four midfielders. How the home faithful must wish he played in red 8/10
Lucas Moura: Excellent once again and took his two goals extremely well. Son Heung-min faces a real fight to re-gain his place in the team when he returns 9/10
Harry Kane: A towering header to break the deadlock and linked up well with Moura, Alli and Eriksen. Should have had a couple 7/10
