It might not have been in the spirit of fairness, but one Feyenoord fan found a novel way to deny PSV Eindhoven an equaliser in the Eredivisie on Monday evening.
PSV went into the game at De Kuip unbeaten and top of the table, 13 points ahead of Feyenoord in third. They soon found themselves 2-0 down to goals from Nicolai Jørgensen and Sam Larsson, however, before pulling one back through Steven Bergwijn with just under 20 minutes to go.
Not long afterwards, with PSV in the ascendancy, they surged forward on the attack again through Bergwijn. He unleashed a shot which was saved by Feyenoord goalkeeper Justin Bijlow, who could only parry into the path of a couple of converging PSV players.
That’s when a second football entered the field…

In what seemed for a moment to be some sort of multiball scenario – the latest genius innovation to come out of Dutch football – another ball bounced into the penalty area, leaving both teams momentarily baffled.

That gave the referee little choice but to stop the game. It didn’t take long for the PSV players to explode with rage when they realised the extra ball had been thrown onto the field by one of the home fans behind the goal.
PSV thwarted
With a delicious lack of cosmic justice, PSV went on to lose the game 2-1. Feyenoord are now 10 points behind them with a game in hand, but the gap with second-place Ajax has closed to just two.
Lobbing an extra ball on the pitch might not have been the most sportsmanlike behaviour from the Feyenoord fan in question, but it turned out to be pretty effective. If there’s a moral to this story, then, it’s that the universe either doesn’t care if people do bad things or has a tenner on Ajax to win the league this season.
