This season has been the stuff of nightmares for Manchester United and Jose Mourinho, as the club proved unable to kick on from a second-place Premier League finish despite dipping their toes into the transfer market once again during the summer.
Wasteful spending, an erratic transfer strategy, dressing room discord, poor results and ugly performances have been just a few of the problems attributed to Mourinho’s tenure.

Tuesday proved to be his last day as coach, as the club looked to move in the wake of their 3-1 league defeat at the hands of Liverpool and make a change. Pressure and criticism has built to incredible levels in recent months, ultimately ending in Mourinho’s sacking.
Manchester United has announced that Jose Mourinho has left the Club.
We would like to thank him for his work during his time at Manchester United and wish him success in the future. #MUFC

Unsurprisingly, the news has caused quite a stir among fans and pundits.
Here’s what Twitter had to say:
The reaction
I have all the respect for Jose Mourinho of what he did last season, and whatever he has achieved as a manager, but honestly his tactics have become outdated or other clubs become more advanced tactically. Jose might needs to re-think & change his style.
Thanks boss !

Always been a sense of inevitability about his sacking. Personally I feel the players have massively underperformed, but there’s no doubt the buck stops with the manager. Shame as he was always good for bants. #Mourinho

Mourinho was once a trailblazer. But his methods stopped working years ago. Failure to manage Pogba properly was unacceptable. Football was dire. Strong decisive action by #MUFC yet Mourinho walks with another huge pay off. He'll be laughing

Mourinho was always a busted flush and too many people blinded themselves to what an utter disaster Chelsea was. United should never have appointed him.

Let's be honest, we owe Jose Mourinho a thank you for completing the club. He went on to win the Europa League, the last trophy we did not have in our club.
Thanks Jose and best of luck in the future. pic.twitter.com/F9QZBPs2Wc

Mourinho sacked. He was the overwhelming fan choice in ‘16. Had a good first season, an acceptable second one until it faded badly. This season has been atrocious and 80% of fans wanted him gone in the last month – not that he’s the only one to blame. Thanks and good luck.
