Neil Warnock takes over at Middlesbrough after club sack Jonathan Woodgate

Neil Warnock has been appointed Middlesbrough manager after Jonathan Woodgate was sacked on Tuesday morning.

Boro were beaten 3-0 at home by Swansea on Saturday in their first competitive match for three months, Liverpool loanee Rhian Brewster scoring twice for the visitors.

The result leaves Middlesbrough 21st in the Championship table, only out of the relegation zone by virtue of a superior goal difference to fellow strugglers Hull City.

Warnock, managing the 17th club of his 40-year career, will have just eight games to save his new team’s Championship status.

A statement on the Middlesbrough website said: “MFC can confirm that head coach Jonathan Woodgate has been relieved of his duties with immediate effect.

“Jonathan was relieved of his role on Tuesday morning and will be replaced by the experienced Neil Warnock.

“Warnock will assume responsibility immediately.

“The club would like to place on record its thanks to Jonathan for all his work in the role of head coach.”
