Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic claims that Uefa has not applied its Covid-19 rules consistently, after Scotland midfielder Billy Gilmour tested positive for the virus.
With their matches scheduled for Hampden Park and Wembley, Croatia were set to base their preparations for Euro 2020 in Scotland. But they were forced to cancel plans at the end of May due to concerns about local Covid-19 rules.
Dalic believed that if a player tested positive for the virus then other players and staff would have to self-isolate. But after the Scottish Football Association revealed that Gilmour had tested positive, ruling him out of the final Group D game against Croatia, they insisted no other players require isolation.
“The conditions should be the same for all,” Dalic said. “They’re not the same for all. I wish for Gilmour to recover well. And I don’t wish for anymore Scottish players to test positive.”
As a consequence of cancelling their training plans, Dalic had to base their camp in Croatia, badly disrupting their tournament with additional travelling.
And the 2018 World Cup runners-up have disappointed. They lost to England in their opening game and drew against the Czech Republic, meaning anything but a victory in their final group will eliminate them from the competition. Furthermore, if England and the Czechs draw their game, Croatia will also be unable to finish in the top two.
“We’ve made an exception and we stayed in Croatia,” Dalic said. “And we’re traveling every three days. Those are not good conditions.”
