Harry Kane is set to start England’s final Euro 2020 group game against Czech Republic.England’s captain has been widely criticised for his performances in England’s first two games, a victory against Croatia and goalless draw with Scotland.
But Southgate is set to keep faith with the Premier League Golden Boot winner in their final match. A win will mean England top the group while a draw will secure them second place.
Asked by ITV if Kane would keep his place, Southgate said: “You can assume that. I don’t mind giving you that.”
England’s manager also defended his decision to substitute Kane, who was top scorer at the last World Cup, in both England’s games so far.
“One of the games we were already ahead and we needed energy to press and keep the lead – we didn’t need an additional goal,” Southgate explained.
“During the World Cup we ended up playing a lot of football and we felt the need to manage that load a little bit this time. And we have got good option on the bench to bring people into the game.
“But he’s our most important player, there is no doubt about that – you have only got to look at his goalscoring record with us to see his importance to the team.”
