Euro 2020 odds: Ranking all 24 teams at Euro 2020 after matchday two

When the 2pm kick-offs have disappeared, you know we’re into serious territory at Euro 2020.

Each nation has now played at least twice and while the likes of Italy have cruised into the knockout rounds without any trouble, England, Spain and Portugal have been hit with reality checks.

The third of those will know full well that no country should be written off at the group stages; at Euro 2016, Portugal only gleaned three points from their opening fixtures before going on to win the whole thing.

At the very least, however, we’ve been given an indication of which teams are looking like potential winners and who has failed to live up to the hype.

Hungary’s draw with France was one of the biggest upsets so far, with Les Bleus – one of the favourites going into the tournament – pegged back against the group’s minnows.

That will sound painfully familiar to England fans who watched a laboured encounter with Scotland at Wembley, spiced up only by a buoyant set of visiting fans.

The European Championship is a little more open, at least, because 24 teams qualified this time around with Uefa hoping the system will give more opportunities to “middle-ranking” nations.

With that in mind, here are i‘s power rankings based on every game so far.

24. Turkey

Diabolical, as Alan Hansen would say. There is no way a squad containing three of Lille’s Ligue 1 title-winners, AC Milan’s playmaker and central defenders from Juventus and Leicester City should perform so hopelessly. A record of two defeats, five goals conceded and none scored tells its own story.

23. North Macedonia

Unlike Turkey, nothing was expected of North Macedonia prior to their first international tournament. They will be delighted to have scored in consecutive matches even if they suffered defeats in both and will hope to earn their first points against the Dutch.

22. Poland

Robert Lewandowski and 10 others. Poland’s failure to maximise the talents of one of the top three players in the world has been their undoing once more. Like Turkey, they should be doing much more with the squad at their disposal, even if they managed a point against Spain.

21. Switzerland

Switzerland were a tad unfortunate not to take all three points against Wales in their opening match but they were well-beaten by Italy on matchday two. To their credit, the Swiss are perennial qualifiers for major tournaments these days. But they rarely do themselves justice when they get there.

  • Portugal – 9-1
  • Spain – 10-1
  • Netherlands – 12-1
  • Denmark – 50-1
  • Sweden – 66-1
  • Czech Republic – 75-1
  • Croatia – 75-1

  • Austria – 90-1
  • Switzerland – 90-1
  • Ukraine – 90-1
  • Russia – 125-1
  • Poland – 150-1
  • Scotland – 200-1
  • Finland – 500-1
  • Slovakia – 500-1
  • Hungary – 500-1
  • Turkey – 1500-1

20. Croatia

Another nation that is underachieving with the resources available. Mario Mandzukic and Ivan Rakitic are sorely missed, but a team containing Luka Modric, Ivan Perisic and Mateo Kovacic should be far more effective.

19. Scotland

Croatia’s next opponents. Scotland should come into the game in a more upbeat mood after delivering an excellent performance at Wembley on Friday night. Steve Clarke must be lamenting his decision to not start Billy Gilmour and Che Adams against the Czech Republic in the opening game.

18. Austria

Austria finally won their first match at a European Championship, beating the mighty North Macedonia, but regressed alarmingly against the Netherlands. Franco Foda’s decision to play David Alaba as a sweeper has been one of the most baffling tactical decisions of any manager at the competition.

17. Denmark

The Finland defeat was a write-off given the circumstances and anything else that Denmark achieve is a bonus. Were it not for the half-time introduction of Kevin De Bruyne, the Danes could have easily won their second game against Belgium and nobody could begrudge them from sneaking into the last-16 by beating Russia. Except for the Russians.

16. Hungary

Whatever happens from now, Hungary can hold their heads high. They were written off as the whipping boys of Group F but held Portugal out for 85 minutes and then took a point off the world champions and tournament favourites France. Home advantage has helped, but the players deserve immense credit, especially the excellent Peter Gulacsi in goal.

15. Slovakia

Failed to build upon their opening game win over Poland in their second match against Sweden but should have done enough to progress to the last-16 regardless. No team with three points or more exited Euro 2016 at the group stage.

14. Russia

Comprehensively beaten by Belgium but much-improved against Finland. Aleksey Miranchuk netted one of the most aesthetically pleasing goals of the tournament last time out, but Russia will need their captain Artem Dzyuba to start scoring if they are to reach the latter stages.

13. Finland

Their first-ever win at a major tournament obviously comes with a gigantic asterisk given what happened with Christian Eriksen, but it shouldn’t be lost that Finland have overachieved to even get to this point. It will take a monumental effort to get a result against Belgium, but they may have already done enough to qualify.

12. Ukraine

Like Austria, they have only beaten North Macedonia, but they did at least have a go at beating the Dutch, coming from 2-0 down to level only to concede a late winner. Andriy Yarmolenko started just one Premier League game for West Ham last season, but has put himself in the shop window at this tournament.

11. Sweden

Sweden were dogged and resilient against Spain in earning a point despite having only 15 per cent of the ball and then stepped it up against Slovakia, edging a poor game thanks to Emil Forsberg’s penalty. Their tactic from here on in is simple enough: give the ball to the wonderful Alexander Isak.

10. Portugal

A 3-0 win over Hungary massively flattered Portugal and their goal difference has been whittled right back down after losing 4-2 to Germany. On the plus side, they look devastating on the counter-attack and Cristiano Ronaldo has already scored three times. Conversely, Joao Cancelo is a monumental miss at right back.

9. Spain

The problem is goals, or lack thereof with just one scored in their opening two matches. After a stalemate with Sweden, Alvaro Morata silenced his critics (a little) by putting one past Poland in a 1-1 draw – but Gerard Moreno missed a penalty to add to the sense that Luis Enrique’s men seriously need to improve if they’re to compete.

8. England

England fans were probably guilty of getting carried away after the win over Croatia. And they are probably guilty of getting carried away after the draw with Scotland. Gareth Southgate’s side have plenty of room for improvement, particularly in attack, but they have at least kept things solid at the back by keeping two clean sheets. Unleash Jadon Sancho please, Gareth.

7. Czech Republic

Not much was expected of the Czech Republic pre-tournament but they are sitting pretty on four points after two games ahead of the Group D decider against England. Star striker Patrik Schick has been one of the standout stars of the competition, scoring three goals.

6. Wales

Possibly a bit high in the rankings, but then how many teams have actually been that impressive? Wales have shown spirit and resilience in spades in both of their matches so far, particularly against Turkey when they faced a second half onslaught. Whisper it, but a repeat of Euro 2016 might just be on the cards…

5. Germany

Although they were toothless against France, Germany might have felt that a point apiece would have been a deserved outcome. They were far more effective and clinical against Portugal, though, with Robin Gosens and Joshua Kimmich wreaking havoc from the wing-back positions. With Kai Havertz and Serge Gnabry finding their feet in the second game, Germany have the attacking personnel to blow teams away.

4. France

Remember the 2018 World Cup? France were abysmal for much of the group stages but got the job done and then went on to lift the trophy. They’ve actually been better in the early stages of this tournament and in truth, could quite easily have six points if Karim Benzema hadn’t left his shooting boots in Madrid, rather than taken them with him to Budapest. They can only get better, surely.

3. Netherlands

Is it time for Frank de Boer to get some credit? He hasn’t had it easy since taking the reins from Ronald Koeman, losing his captain Virgil van Dijk to injury and first-choice ‘keeper Jasper Cillessen to a positive Covid-19 test. But the Dutch have secured their place in the knockout rounds relatively comfortably, a manic 10 minutes against Ukraine aside. The superbly named Denzel Dumfries has been a revelation.

2. Belgium

Belgium have had 135 very good minutes and 45 very bad ones so far. They were utterly dominant against Belgium but poor against Denmark in the first half. The introductions of Axel Witsel, Eden Hazard and in particular, Kevin De Bruyne during the second period, though, completely transformed the game and offered a reminder as to why they are the top-ranked team in the world.

1. Italy

By a distance, the most accomplished team at the tournament so far. The Italians hadn’t scored three goals in a European Championship game prior to Euro 2020: they have now done so in back-to-back games, dishing out 3-0 defeats to Turkey and Switzerland. Pick a team of the tournament now and Leonardo Spinazzola, Manuel Locatelli and Jorginho would be among the first names on the teamsheet. And in Roberto Mancini, they arguably have the sharpest tactical mind – and certainly the sharpest dresser – in the dugout.
